Abstract This paper explores the interaction between ne-grained connguration management, ver-sioning and traceability. Taken individually, the underlying concepts are relatively simple , but taken in conjunction the situation becomes quite complex. This paper presents a model which integrates the three concepts. The model is illustrated on a case study concerning requirements tracing and conformance between versions of documents, at the level of individual requirements. Two dimensions of tracing are covered: evolution of individual requirements within a document, and how requirements in one document are addressed by elements of a second document. The model is formally speciied in Z.
